Hook Presents:’You Gotta Be Sh*ttin me!’

Vietnam- 1965: If Rolling Thunder has proven anything, it’s that the North Vietnam SA-2 SAM threat is a problem the US can no longer afford to ignore. Take to the skies in a series of missions inspired by Operation Wild Weasel I & II. We will take the fight to the SA-2 threat in some of the most daring missions of the Vietnam War. Welcome to the Wild Weasels!

BRIEFING
Welcome back to Vietnam, Knights. In this first mission, you’ll be tasked with clearing the way for a group of bombers due to strike NVA targets later in the day, as part of Operation Rolling Thunder. The corridor you are responsible for has known SA-2 activity, however the location of these sites has not been pinpointed, so you will hunt and kill the Guidelines. This will not be easy, and will require you to likely be fired upon by the SAM sites in order to locate and destroy them.

You’ll sortie out from Takhli AFB in Thailand. From there you will proceed into North Vietnam as a flight. The A-4s will primarily be responsible for firing of AGM-45 Shrike missiles, but may also carry other air to ground weapons to assist in “clean up” of the SAM sites. The F-100s will escort the A-4s, and have the option of assisting in the strike, performing MiGCAP, or both, at commanders discretion.

Once a corridor has been cleared, the flight leader will give the go ahead to the bombers that will be inbound within TWO HOURS of mission start. We are working on a schedule, so the Wild Weasels will need to get their job done right and fast.

You have an option for a clearing sweep of F-4 Phantoms (Callsign FORD) to assist in MiGCAP. Be careful when calling them in… Too early, and they may be lost to SA-2s, too late, and they will not arrive in time to assist your flight. Best practice would be to call them in as a secondary sweep once you’ve penetrated hostile airspace.

INTEL
Threat Assessment:

NVA & VC Operations in the area and dense and complex. SA-2 sites are known to be in the region and are fully operational. SA-2 sites are typically protected by their own weapons systems, and are supplemented by AAA, typically ZSU 23mm, small arms, and flak.

MiG are controlled by GCI and may respond to penetration of airspace. North Vietnam MiG 17s (MiG 15) and MiG 19s have been contacted in the area. Typically the MiGs will carry onboard cannons only.
