SkyKnight Presents:
“Persian Gauntlet” Turn 7

This morning’s ISR photo pass on the Tunb Islands has revealed increased activity by Iranian forces over the past 24 hours, consistent with defensive reinforcement of the islands by SHORAD and ASM batteries. Mine laying activity also appears to be originating from these islands.  Air strikes have been ordered.

INTRODUCTION
Persian Gauntlet is a campaign that explores one possible outcome of the United States withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred to as the “Iran Nuclear Deal”… the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. In reality, just weeks ago, Iran made public threats to close the Strait, so the timing of this campaign could not be more appropriate.

While the scenario may be hypothetical, the tactics used by Iran to close the Strait are based on real-world intel as well as material published by many defense and intelligence industry think tanks. The term “Wargame” is appropriate, as it is much more than just a set of missions.  It’s an evolving battlefield based on the decisions made by the squadron.

Playing like a strategy board game, each virtual “Day” of the campaign will be divided into 2 Turns… an AM turn and a PM turn. Each Monday night, One Turn will be played. After the conclusion of each Turn, a tactical report along with any Iranian response will be provided, based on the outcome of the mission just flown. These “TACREPS” will be posted to our website, for review and discussion by our squadron while planning for the next Turn.  It’s up to you…our squadron members, to decide on the strategy and tactics you will use to accomplish the operational goals and objectives of the campaign.

The wargame is centered around a United States Navy Expeditionary Strike Group led by the USS Wasp configured for the Sea Control mission, with 20 AV-8B Harrier jump jets embarked. Additional AI naval and air assets will be available to leverage during the wargame.

As in any wargame, resources will be limited.  We only have what we are taking into battle, so an emphasis should be placed on preserving airframes. A Wargame Guide complete with an Intelligence report and Rules of Play will be made available for use in planning and executing our Turns in Persian Gauntlet.
